The launch of a new Ferrari convertible doesn’t happen every day and the PR people of Maranello are making the most of it. The first pictures of the much rumoured ‘baby’ Ferrari have been given to the press along with a taste of the specification.
It’s name is the Ferrari California, reflecting it’s target market and it is aimed at broadening the brand’s market share by providing a GT at a more affordable level than the flagship 612 Scaglietti. It takes Ferrari a little further down the road to a useable every-day car that does not compromise on performance.
The new model has a front-engined layout and a folding hard top to give a level practicality. Versatile it may be but this is still every inch a Ferrari; a high revving 4.3 litre V8 engine nestles in the aluminium chassis and is coupled up to a 7 speed dual-clutch transmission. The California appears to be a strict two seater and a more manageable size than some of the marque’s other models. There is no news of how the folding hard top will work and no pictures of it up but history suggests that it will be an innovative design.
The official launch will be at the Paris International Car Show later this year however further information is expected to be released in the build up.
