With the arrival of the SLS Roadster, it seemed that Mercedes were going to settle for the V8 AMG SL alone, but they surprised us in 2012 with a top of the range V12 powered Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG. It is a statement car with a price to match and although it may stand a little in the shadow of the SLS it is only marginally less expensive or powerful. It is on the other hand considerably more comfortable and luxurious to travel in. It is perhaps a bit more grown-up than the SLS and owners are safe in the knowledge that nothing quite matches a 12 cylinder engine.
At some 170 kg lighter than the SL65 that came before it, the new flagship is even quicker and far more agile. Power comes from a twin-turbocharged 6-litre V12 engine – an updated version of a Mercedes classic which is now more efficient than ever thanks to new manifolds and wastegates, optimised cylinder heads and a new ECU. Despite all this, the dash from 0-62 mph comes in at just 2 tenths of a second faster than the old version.
