BMW’s compact M car has taken many forms over the years with the last 3 generations offering convertible versions. BMW M4 Convertible is a new name despite remaining based on the 3-Series platform and while looking rather similar to the generation before, is quite a different car.
As with all BMWs, the engine dictates most of the characteristics. Unlike the previous V8 this one makes a return to the straight six-cylinder layout and reduces capacity down to just 3 litres. Twin turbos take up the burden and give it an almighty amount of shove even at low revs. This makes the car much more flexible but also less busy and intense to drive. It is faster in every way than the cars that came before it particularly in normal road situations and but it also feels more grown-up and sensible. BMW won’t be the only company that you hear us say this about as cars become every more bound it technology and sophistication. Thankfully the chassis is highly communicative and precise so that given the right road the M4 will shine in a way very few performance cars can. It brings new levels of fuel economy, precision and mid-range response compared with the previous M3 but at a loss of the audible delights that car offered.
The BMW M4 Convertible is a fantastic car in many ways and the as it balances every-day usability, predictable handling and mind blowing performance in a car that although not cheap, is priced well under the supercars with which it can compete.
