The Porsche 918 Spyder sets new standards in both road car performance and technology. Use of a race car sourced V8 petrol engine and twin electric motors make it in effect, an all wheel drive car however, the engine power to the rear wheels can be turned off when not required allowing only electricity to power both front and rear wheels.
The combined sources produce a huge power output allowing the 918 to set a new series production street-legal automobile record at the Nürburgring track where it had been developed.
Even the electric only mode is potent, giving a near silent 0-100kmph time of 7 seconds and a top speed of 97mph. The electric power has a range of around 18 miles and the batteries are recharged while driving under petrol power and through regenerative braking or from the a mains a/c outlet.
The chassis is designed in track car style with a carbon fibre monocoque and separate body panels. The styling is functional but handsome blending optimal aerodynamic efficiency, the style of Porsche’s road cars and racing car details.
Porsche plan to build a limited edition of 918 cars split between RSR track cars and road-going Spyders.
