While the first generation BMW 4-Series Convertible is yet to be revealed the newly released Coupe details hint to what the drop-top version may hold.
The 4-Series is BMW’s rebranding of what was previously sold as the 3-Series Coupe and Convertible. The new prefix number giving it clearer separation as a sports model in its own right just as Audi have done with the A4 and A5. The 4-Series is clearly based on the 3-Series platform but has a 10mm lower ride height bringing the centre of gravity under 500mm; the lowest of any BMW to date. The suspension has also been tuned to provide more responsive handling with the 4-Series 60 per cent stiffer at the front end compared to the standard 3-Series saloon/sedan.
The Coupe is to be introduced before the Convertible and initially will be offered as a 420d, 428i and 435i although the diesel option is unlikely to be available to North American markets. 420i, 430d, 435d and finally an M4 variant will also be added at later dates. The Coupe will also be offered in all-wheel-drive xDrive form although this may not make its way to the Convertible. The xDrive option is being introduced to compete with Audi’s Quattro system which gives driving security particularly in wet or icy conditions. It also will provide increased traction for the high torque diesel powered engines in the six-cylinder BMW 430d and 435d. With the 435d being xDrive only, at least in some regions.
The 4 Series styling reflects the current 3-Series design but with a more elegant sporting edge. As with the outgoing E92 model the convertible roof is expected to be a hardtop design to add to the luxury feel and practicality.
BMW will offer their drivers a welcome choice of gearbox with six speed manuals still available in all models bar the 430d and 435d. News that will please purists, while auto drivers will gain launch control for all models and better CO2 and economy figures from the eight-speed automatic gearbox.
All engines offer impressive levels of both performance and economy ranging from the 420d with a 0-62mph time of 7.5 seconds and 124g/km and 60.1mpg as a manual, to the high performance 435i with 5.1 seconds, 39.2mpg and 169g/km as an auto.
As with the 3-Series, the 4-Series cars will be offered in SE, Sport, Modern, Luxury and M Sport specifications. BMW’s Drive Performance Control, Dual-zone air conditioning, leather with heated front seats, DAB, parking sensors and a 6.5 inch screen iDrive system come as standard in all cars.
