The Mazda MX-5 Miata Spyder concept has been unveiled at the Las Vegas SEMA show. Unlike much of the after-market tuned cars on display this comes straight from the manufacturer. As well as Mazdaspeed lowered suspension and big 17″ alloy wheels the MX5 Spyder has a skinny stretched canvas roof which when removed reveals two humps on the rear panel. The Mazda concept has more than a little of the Porsche Boxster Spyder about it but that’s no bad thing.
The stock 2-litre 4-cylinder engine is tuned to use isobutanol biofuel as powers the Mazda-Dyson Racing ALMS car. Along with a a lightweight lithium ion battery it should have lively performance.
The chances of it making it to production are slim but if the reaction is positive enough Mazda may produce a limited run although probably with a petrol engine. It may not be all that practical when the rain falls but the idea of Mazda finally producing a hot Miata is good enough for us!
