The Pink Panther car seen in the opening and closing credits of the Pink Panther Show was the fantasy of many children growing up in the 1970s. The car, known as the Panthermobile, was designed by Hollywood’s master vehicle designer Jay Ohrberg, a man with cars such as the Knight Rider K.I.T.T., the Back To The Future DeLorean, both 1966 and 1989 Batman Batmobiles, the Dukes of Hazzard General Lee, Starsky & Hutch’s Ford Gran Torino.
The car was originally owned by Mr Ohrberg right up until June of 2007 when it was auctioned by Coys where it fetched (GBP) £88,000. The second owner will now be parting with the car by online auction while the car is displayed at London’s Chelsea Auto Legends Show on 4th September.
At 42 years old the still pink Panthermobile is said to be in totally original condition but would benefit from a sympathetic restoration. The engine no longer runs although it may have been in working order in 2007 when the car was purchased. Sadly this iconic car is not road legal and so can only be driven on private roads. The driver’s seat only appears to be child sized anyway! The car is expected to sell for between (GBP) £50,000 and £100,000.
