The Spyder was the highest performing Boxster ever when introduced in 2010, with a focus very much on the driving experience. Weight was cut down by 8kg over the standard model and along with an engine tuned to Cayman S levels it had a healthy amount of power too.
Unlike the previous Porsche Boxster RS Spyder the car was not a limited edition, it held a permanent place in the Porsche line-up until being phased out with the introduction of the 2012 Boxster. The weight was reduced by using light-weight materials, the doors are aluminium, for example, and by cutting down the equipment. There was no radio or air conditioning in the standard configuration, but they could be added at no extra cost. The roof or ‘cap’ as Porsche refer to it, was cut down to the minimum.
The changes improve the drive more than the figures suggest, but the roof is much less practical making this a car for the enthusiast.
